How important is it for architects to trigger thoughts, feelings, behaviours, creativity, focus and relaxation of individuals via the use of Environmental Psychology applied in Architecture? It is Scientifically proven that if you apply Psychology in Architecture, you can just about with any person change their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, creativity, focus and relaxation.
This type of Psychology is most beneficial in Education and Health Care Architecture. I remember visiting a school in south east London just after they had done the extensions and renovations. What mostly got my interest on the tour visit was the use of height ceilings in the classrooms. It is believed that students who are taught in a room of a high ceiling classroom tend to do a lot better in test papers compare to the ones with an average height ceiling. Also on this note, students who are exposed to nature and not man made structures within a school environement tend to have a more relaxed focus and concentrations compare to the ones that don't. Other than greenery and height ceilings, a very crucial part of our natural world, has a very powerful source that we can use, and that is 'Light' Some institutions lack in this advantage use, which means that the majority parts of buildings do not have enough natural light penetrating through. Research shows that the kids in classrooms with the least daylight had disrupted levels of cortisol, a hormone that is regulated by the body’s circadian rhythms. Ample of sunlight has shown to prove students outcome.
It is very crucial, even at home to have an environment for the family that you maximize these possibilities, by the use of light, colour and natural materials as well. It is Scientifically proven that these all have positive effect on the human psyche. The elements can be noticed by the immediate feel of difference when entering a space that is I guess composed for a well being. Architects have long believed that the place we inhabit can nest or perhaps nurture our thoughts, feelings and behavior.
Ancient Greeks have said 'you can't enjoy a good health in a bad building'
Thanks for Reading, Plenty more to come, but in detail.
this is very true. I have always tried to pick classes that were held during the day (more light). When I was living on my own the room I used to write papers and read was painted bright orange and surrounded my several plants. For me light and proximity are very important.
ReplyDeleteWith regards to the health care architecture..i guess that is why hospitals are usually blue. Blue-being a very calming color..
